Lip slugging is a super simple overnight method that seals in moisture while you sleep, so you wake up to softer, smoother lips.
Start with your favorite lip balm, hydrating lip mask, or clean, slightly damp lips, then smooth Vaseline® Original Healing Jelly over the top. Think of that glossy layer as a moisture-saving lid. It helps to slow water loss while you sleep, giving your lips time to repair while the rest of you catches up on sleep.
Here's exactly how it works, and why it's become one of the internet's favorite K-beauty hacks.
What Is Lip Slugging?
Odds are you already know about facial slugging; the lip version follows the same moisture-sealing principle. The name comes from the shiny finish left by the occlusive layer, which calls to mind the glistening trail a slug leaves behind.
For lip slugging, order matters. Moisture goes on first, followed by a layer of petroleum jelly to help keep it from escaping. Fun fact: While K-beauty and social media gave the method its catchy name, the technique itself is far from new. Petrolatum has helped to protect skin and lock in moisture for well over a century.
The Physiology of Lips: Why Lip Skin Dehydrates Easily
Your lips do plenty of heavy lifting with a surprisingly lightweight moisture barrier. Lip skin has higher transepidermal water loss and lower water content than cheek skin.¹
One reason is that the visible part of your lips, called the vermilion, does not have the normal network of oil-producing sebaceous glands found across much of your facial skin, which means lips can't produce the protective oil layer facial skin relies on to stay hydrated.²
The lip barrier is also unusually thin: its outermost layer is roughly one-third the thickness of facial skin.² Together, these differences make it easier for moisture to escape, leaving lips feeling tight or flaky and causing cosmetics like lipstick to catch on dry patches.
Nighttime gives overnight lip repair products several relatively undisturbed hours to stay in place. Want to know what's behind the dryness in the first place? Check out our full guide to dry and chapped lips.
How to Lip Slug, Step-by-Step
Ready to give it a go?
1. Start with clean lips. Remove lipstick, gloss, food residue and your daytime balm so the moisture step can sit directly against your lips.
2. Gently exfoliate if needed. If the lips feel flaky, gently buff away the dry skin with a damp washcloth or mild lip scrub. Our guide to using a lip scrub covers the soft-touch technique. Skip this step if your lips feel raw, painful, split or broken.
3. Apply lip balm. Smooth on a thin layer of your favorite hydrating lip balm or even a light facial moisturizer.
4. Seal the moisture in. Follow with Vaseline® Healing Jelly Original that’s 100% pure and hypoallergenic. If you prefer a tube format, choose the Vaseline® Lip Therapy® Advanced Healing Tube. Use enough to comfortably coat your lips, but there is no need to pile it on.
5. Leave it undisturbed overnight. In the morning, gently wipe away any residue before applying your usual daytime lip care.
Lip Slugging: Ingredients to Approach with Caution
Some people find that menthol, camphor, phenol, fragrance and flavor can feel uncomfortable on lips that are dry to begin with. Also be careful not to seal exfoliating acids beneath petrolatum, since the occlusive keeps them in contact with delicate lip skin for longer. Our guide to the right lip balm for your lips is a good way to compare formulas.
Your Nighttime Lip Slugging Routine for Softer Lips by Morning
Make lip slugging the final step of your nighttime skincare routine. You can try it every night or simply do it when dryness starts making itself known.
Your lips may feel softer and more comfortable after the first night, but stubborn flakes usually need a few consistent evenings to settle. If dead skin builds up, a gentle lip scrub between sessions can help lip slugging work even better.
During the day, a portable lip balm such as Vaseline® Lip Therapy® Original Mini is easy to toss in a bag or pocket and helps keep the moisture-saving habit going between coffee, convos and meals.
Give dry, chapped lips an overnight seal with Vaseline® Original Healing Jelly — triple-purified, fragrance-free and the simplest way to hold moisture in place until morning.

FAQs
Is petroleum jelly good for chapped lips?
Petroleum jelly can help chapped lips feel softer and more comfortable by creating a barrier that slows moisture loss. Lip slugging builds on this benefit by applying petrolatum over clean, moisturized lips before bed.
Can you put Vaseline® on your lips for lip slugging?
Yes, Vaseline® Healing Jelly Original is 100% triple-purified, hypoallergenic and can be applied to the lips. Vaseline® Lip Therapy® Original Mini and Advanced Healing Tube are great when you want something more portable.
Should you apply moisturizer or water before Vaseline®?
Apply a hydrating lip balm or moisturizer first, preferably a lip-friendly formula with a humectant such as glycerin or hyaluronic acid, then seal it in with Vaseline®. If you do not have one, lightly dampen clean lips with water before applying the petrolatum layer.
How often can you slug your lips at night?
Most people can slug their lips nightly without any issues. If you notice irritation, scale back to a few nights a week. One exception: avoid layering petroleum jelly over exfoliating acids or other active ingredients, since sealing them in can increase irritation.
Is lip slugging suitable for sensitive lips?
Vaseline® Healing Jelly Original is fragrance-free, hypoallergenic and non-irritating, making it a great option for sensitive skin. Speak to a dermatologist before adding a new lip-care step if you have eczema, cheilitis or another diagnosed condition affecting your lips.
